Our History

Hamdard Laboratories was founded by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in 1906. ‘Hamdard’ is a Persian compound word derived from ‘Ham’ (together) and ‘Dard’ (pain). Thus, the meaning of “Hamdard” is “A Companion in Pain” and “A Sympathizer in Suffering.”

Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed

1883 – 1922

Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, son of Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh, was born in Pilibhit, a city in Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1883. He studied Urdu and Persian and was also fluent in Arabic as he was Hafiz too. He acquired extensive knowledge of the Unani system of medicine and worked closely with Hakeem Ajmal Khan.

In 1906, Abdul Majeed established a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi, naming it Hamdard Dawakhana, and began producing Unani medicines. This modest herbal shop evolved into a full-fledged production house by 1920. Unfortunately, Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed passed away in 1922.

After his demise, Hamdard Dawakhana was taken over by his wife, Rabea Begum, who managed it for five years until their eldest son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, attained the age of majority. The younger son, Hakeem Mohammad Said, was also a Hafiz and received his technical education from Tibbiya College, Delhi and joined Hamdard in 1940.

In 1948, continuing the vision and mission of Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, Hamdard Dawakhana was converted into a public charitable trust through a document executed by Rabea Begum, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, and Hakeem Mohammad Said. Hakeem Mohammad Said migrated to Pakistan and Rabea Begum passed away in 1949, thereafter, Hakeem Abdul Hameed became the sole surviving settlor of the Hamdard Dawakhana Trust.

After the sad demise of Hakeem Abdul Hameed in 1999, Mr. Abdul Mueed took over the reins of Hamdard Laboratories & Hamdard National Foundation. It was under his visionary leadership that Hamdard embarked on a journey of growth, digitization, and transformation, ultimately achieving a turnover of ₹500 crores (5000 Million) in FY 2014–15.

The Journey of Hamdard

Hamdard’s journey began in 1906 when Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed founded a small clinic in Delhi – Hamdard Dawakhana, dedicated to Unani medicine. After his passing in 1922, his wife Rabia Begum nurtured the institution until their son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, assumed leadership. Under his guidance, Hamdard transformed into a public charitable trust in 1948. Recognized for his contributions with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards, Hakeem Abdul Hameed laid a strong foundation of service and education. His son, Abdul Mueed, modernized the organization, achieving significant growth. The legacy continues today through the leadership of Abdul Majeed and Asad Mueed, upholding Hamdard’s mission of health and humanitarian service.
